Syllabus
Class Description
This class is an overview of the life and times of Jesus including his journeys and ministry, harmonizing the synoptic gospels as well as a brief analysis of geographical backgrounds.
Course Description
The purpose of this course is to survey the earthly life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth as recorded in the four canonical gospels. This will be accomplished by focusing the student’s attention primarily on the narrative flow of the events so as to ascertain the basic pattern of development in Jesus’ actions and teachings. Particular emphasis will be placed on incidents rather than the long discourses.
At the option of the professor, there may be Included in some of the lessons some Youtube or Vimeo clips for the students benefit as well as supplemental teaching. All Research/Analysis’ papers must be submitted using the TTUS Paper Format Requirements and are taken from the APA guidelines.
Analysis’ Papers:
The student of the Harmony of the Gospel will be required as a final exam to research and write a 13 to 15 page report (Approximately 3000 to 3500 words) on one of the following questions listed below. The questions will also be listed in the final exam portion of the course work as well. The paper will be, double spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font and the student will be required to follow the TTUS Paper Format Requirements.
The paper will be an opinion paper and 6 to 10 references will be required, The student when referring to the Bible in these reports will only cite the Bible reference (Matthew 1:1) and will not include the scripture in the report only the citation.
- The Date/Day of Christ’ Birth – It will be up to the student to study for themselves the date and the day of Christ’s birth and give a reasonable answer to when Jesus Christ was born. I will not looking for conclusiveness on this question but the determination to find the answer and to give a reasonable answer according to the student’s study into the in depth question of when Jesus Christ was born.
- The Virgin Birth – There are critics who reject the virgin birth of Jesus Christ because of the word that is used in Isaiah 7:14 for virgin. The student will study out and defend why we can determine biblically that Jesus Christ was born of a virgin. In the defense of the virgin birth the student will answer the following: a. The basis of the radical position by the critics of the virgin birth. b. The primary basis of the critics rejection of a virgin birth. c. The meaning of the word ‘almah’ as used in Isaiah. d. The summary of evidence in defense of the miracle of the virgin birth.
- The Lord’s Supper – There is much controversy in the Lord’s supper. Should it be Open, Close, or Closed Communion as well as the elements (Wine or grape juice) and even how often we are to do the supper. The student will study for themselves and give an exposition view of this topic and determine by study of the scripture as well as out side sources the proper way the Lord’s Supper should be administered.
- The Crucifixion Day – There is much controversy over the day Jesus Christ was crucified, (Wednesday, Thursday or Friday). The student will choose a day and outline why this was the day Jesus was crucified and defend the day the student chooses. It is not about picking the right day as the professor believes but choosing a day and defending the day you choose Biblically from the Bible. In Seminary I chose a certain day and defended it and made an A+ because Biblically it can be proven even though I do not believe this was the particular day Christ was crucified (Friday). The paper will not be graded according to the day you choose but the defense you give. As students of the Bible we must give an Apoligia and the best way to do this is by knowing what others believe and what we believe.
